The music series of DESIGNING VOICES features vocal performance artists and musicians who use their voice as integral part of their performance practice. The focus of the series in 2021 is on bringing together the tradition of pipe organ playing with the innovative performance practice of applying custom, gesture-controlled live electronics as used in contemporary vocal performance art.
Featured artists are Sten Sandell from Stockholm, Franziska Baumann from Bern (CH), Tone Åse from Trondheim (NO), Ute Wassermann and Alex Nowitz from Berlin and Potsdam, Frédéric Blondy from Avallon (FR), Helmut Zapf from Zepernick, Sabine Vogel from Potsdam and Berlin-based musicians Matthias Bauer and Biliana Voutchkova.
Next to music performances, DESIGNING VOICES presents lecture-performances and installations for sound and video to illuminate both characteristics and peculiarities of contemporary vocal performance art.
Part I of DESIGNING VOICES in 2021 takes place in June (19 June) at the St. Annen Kirche Zepernick and at the Nikolaikirche Potsdam (23 June) featuring Frédéric Blondy (organ) from Avallon (F), Helmut Zapf (organ), Matthias Bauer (double bass, voice), Sabine Vogel (flutes, voice), Biliana Voutchkova (violin, voice) and Alex Nowitz (voice, live electronics), all of whom are from the area of Berlin and Potsdam.
PART II of DESIGNING VOICES in 2021 features the duet project SAM by Stockholm-based artist Sten Sandell (piano, organ, voice, live electronics) and Potsdam-based Alex Nowitz (voice, live electronics—the strophonion) and takes place in the Französische Kirche [French church] in Potsdam (2-3 Nov.) and in the St. Matthäus Kirche in Berlin (4-6 Nov.). Special guests then are the Berlin-based artists Ute Wassermann (voice, whistles) and Matthias Bauer (double bass, voice), Tone Åse (voice, live electronics) from Trondheim (NO) and Franziska Baumann (voice, live electronics—the sensorglove) from Bern (CH).
The music series DESIGNING VOICES was developed by Alex Nowitz in close dialogue with Alexandra Klatt, director of the Berlin Design Week, discussing this year’s theme New Traditions. Originally planned as joint venture, due to the pandemic, most of the presentations of the music series DESIGNING VOICES, except for those planned to happen in June 2021, needed to be postponed to the first week of November 2021.
