statement
"In each new work, I envision a holistic performance approach seeking for a mutual permeation of sound, music, language, and movement. Experimenting with the potential of the existing and discovering new sonic material is an integral part of my compositional work. This not only involves exploring my own artistic capacities but also fully tapping into the potential of the performers.
Composing is structural organization, where I aim to assemble the explored and newly discovered materials in such a way (componere) that the totality of all sonic and musical forms can relate to the present cultural and societal situation, specifically in the place where the work is performed. This means that the work will be received differently in Potsdam than in Seoul, but also that, alongside aesthetic aspects, socio-political issues are addressed, inviting the audience to engage with them. In this context, for instance, I think of Die Bestmannoper [The best man’s opera], 2006, or Tante Marianne [aunt Marianne], 2010, whose historico-political dimensions recall the inadequate coming to terms with what took place during the Nazi period.
Composing today means not only organizing sounds but, through contextualization and connecting sound and music with linguistic elements, movement, and space, designing an overarching grammar that creates a compositional structure aiming to provide coherence in handling sonic or musical material with uniqueness in expression, while simultaneously voicing the socio-political stance of the author.
